NYC Air Quality Hits 'Very Unhealthy' Levels Amid Canadian Wildfire Smoke
US · Published Jul 17, 2026
New York City is experiencing its worst air quality in three years due to thick smoke from Canadian wildfires.
As of Thursday, July 16, 2026, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in parts of the city reached 'very unhealthy' levels, exceeding 230 by 6 p.m.

Impact & Risks

The 'very unhealthy' air quality poses significant health risks to all individuals, especially sensitive groups like children, older adults, and those with heart or lung conditions. Symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, and dizziness have been reported. Outdoor activities are strongly discouraged, and the city has made free KN95 masks available at NYPD precincts, public libraries, and select firehouses. The smoke has also disrupted events, including the Mets-Phillies game in Philadelphia, which was rescheduled due to poor air quality.
